Fly fishing Kupa - Croatia - Čabranka - Kupica - Curak

https://sites.google.com/site/srugoran1926/home

The River Kupa rises at an altitude of 397 m under Risnjak in Gorski kotar. The four km-long source section forms part of the Risnjak National Park, and from the mouth of the River Čabranka to the location of Kamanje, close to Ozalj, it acts as a river border between Croatia and Slovenia. The Kupa is 296 km long, and the section from its source to the location cyprinid, even though huchen can be found all the way to the hydroelectric power plant in Ozalj. Up to this point the Kupa is a canyon river ,while after Ozalj it Flows through lowland country.

At its highest point, the Kupa it is inhabited by grayling, river trout and partly by the Californian trout which migrate from nearby fisheries.

Huchen can be found below the dam in the village of Turki. The best Sites for Fishing are from the source of the river up to 20 or so kilometers below Brod na Kupi.

At Brod na Kupi the tributary river Kupica flows into the Kupa.

Today, it is still one of the richest rivers for grayling, and when fishing there the principle „catch and release „ applies. The upper part of the Kupa, that runs through its canyon part, represents one of the most beautiful parts of mountainous Croatia with a long tradition in fishing tourism, which began after the First World War.

The lowland part of the Kupa actually begins below Ozalj and is over 200 km long, flowing all the way to river Sava. Up to this point the Kupa is fed by a number of tributaries, including the Dobra, Korana (with Mrežnica), Kupčina and, near Sisak, the River Odra.

The lowland part of the Kupa is relatively clear for this type of water and is abundant in numerous locations for the fishing of pike ,catfish, pike-perch, carp, amur and nearly all lowland varieties of fish which inhabit our waters. In the Kupa basin there are a number of carp fisheries from which, after the autumn fishing season, there is a free re-stocking of fish which are no longer economically feasible for the fisheries. As a result there is always an abundance of fish in the Kupa, among others those clearly showing their fish-farm origin

Dear guests fly fishermen and friends !

The role of this short info leaflet is to help you navigate throughout the whole fishable. Waters under the management of the Sport Fishing regulations that are valid in the year 2005.

SFC „Goran“ is an association of fly fishermen founded back in the year 1926 and today it numbers around 130 members. For decades it has been practicing (together with other sport fishing associations in the neighborhood) close to nature management of wild fish populations and waters it has been given the fishing rights.

The main concept in fisheries management therefore continues to be native fish restacking and repopulation with the aim to strengthen and stabilize brown trout , grayling and huchen populations. Non native salmonids, like rainbow trout, have never been introduced intentionally in the river systems you are about to fish. Rare specimens that are occasionally caught introduced intentionally in the river systems you are about to fish. Rare specimens that are occasionally caught originate from fish farms on Čabranka and Kupica river they managed to escape from . Beginning with the season 2004/05 we started the project of artificial nursery embedding (Whitlock-Vibert boxes) so for with excellent results and perfectly conditioned brown trout fry. All this aims to maximize local autochthonous salmonid populations , offering the true, nature loving fishermen a satisfaction of fishing the wild waters with wild fish in them. Another fact worth knowing is that rivers Kupa and Kupica are stocked on a yearly basis with 10-30 cm large brown trout taken out from our nursery streams (Kuželjska Belica, Grbajelska Belica, Lešnički potok, Čedanjski potok) . The same procedure is practiced by our Slovenian colleagues from RD „Kočevje“. Additional stockings with commercially available salmonids must be applied because of the heightened fishermen pressure and have the role of shifting this pressure away from

The native fish in our rivers. Such fish, produced in fish farms, you will surely recognize by the obvious and well known signs (damaged pectoral and caudal fins) but please have understanding as it not always an easy task to find good conditioned farmed brown trout on the market.

By saying this , we hope you will value more every wild brown trout, grayling or huchen that you catch, since probably, some of these were transferred to the river with utmost care and love by our club members or our Slovenian colleague fishermen.

In the year 2005 we have enforced a now restriction on all the waters concerning the ban on grayling (not the fishing itself but only keeping the fish.) At the same time we have , together with Slovenian colleagues, stocked river Kupa with 2000 beautiful graylings of 20-35 cm in our efforts to help this marvelous fish to regain its populations to their former size. We hope that you will support this measure and help us to reach our goal-having once more a river full of grayling shoals including those big ones over 45 cm !

We urge you to familiarize yourself and follow the regulations that are valid in the year 2005 on our waters in order to avoid unpleasant and unnecessary situations. Regulations valid for river Kupa are unified with the Slovenian side so they are identical no matter you buy your fishing permit. Instead of listing a detailed rules of behavior on the water let us just say that you will act most appropriately if you don't do to the others what you wouldn't like the others to do to yourself (water access and car parking on meadows or access dirt roads included).

Let us all show some respect and understanding for the local people that inhabit the valley throughout the whole year (not like us, only during the fishing season) and surely have some rough times assuring decent living in the place they were born and grew !

With sincere wishes for unforgettable moments that you might experience on our waters and visit us again, Tight lines !
